There is absolutely NO sulfur in any of our clays!
What’s the difference between Monster Clay - Brown, Gray, and Green?
In terms of the actual sculpting properties (like softness, pliability, and workability), Monster Clay tends to be consistent across its color variants. The primary differences lie in the visual and psychological aspects that can affect an artist's workflow.
Color Preferences:
Brown: Often chosen for its traditional look, which can resemble natural clay. Some artists find it easier to see details and contrasts in brown clay.
Gray: Preferred by some artists because it provides a neutral tone that can help in visualizing the final piece, especially when working with complex details or preparing for molding and casting.
Green: This color is less common but might be chosen for specific projects or personal preference. It can help in distinguishing different layers or parts of a sculpt.
Visual Contrast:
Different colors provide varying levels of contrast, which can be helpful in different lighting conditions. For example, gray might offer a good mid-tone contrast that works well in various lighting environments.
Psychological Effects:
Sometimes, the color can have a psychological impact on the artist's workflow. For instance, a neutral color like gray might be less distracting and help the artist focus better on the details.
What can I do with my Monster Clay creation once I am finished with it?
Monster Clay is considered a transitional medium in that once you are done creating your sculpture, you make a mold and cast your final piece out of separate materials (Hydrocal and Latex for aHalloween mask or Silicone and Resin for a statue.)
Monster Clay is re-meltable and will return to its original solid state upon cooling and it can be reused indefinitely without change in composition.
Can Monster Clay be sanded or polished?
Yes it can. For polishing Monster Clay to a glass-like surface: Start with a smooth area like top of head. Apply a small amount to paper towel and rub in circular fashion until clay takes on a shiny surface. Myristate can be used on Monster Clay without affecting its reusability, as the clay can absorb and integrate the solvent without causing any issues.
What temperature does Monster Clay Soften at?
All grades of Monster Clay melt at 135°F. The optimal temperature for melting and pouring is around 150°F. Never exceed 180°F. Be sure to periodically mix the clay during melting with careful temperature monitoring. Comfortable handling temperature should not exceed 115°F. To avoid component separation, be sure to completely mix the clay in its melted state, before pouring into your mold. Monster Clay is packaged in an ovenable tray that can withstand temperatures up to 200°F
How many times can I melt my clay down without losing the elastic aspects of Monster Clay?
Monster Clay is formulated to remain elastic after repeated melting. We have melted pieces hundreds of times without any noticeable loss of elasticity.
How long will Monster Clay last in its original container?
Sealed in its original packaging, Monster Clay can last many years. Once opened, Monster Clay still has no specific expiration date. Exposure to heat can cause a slow reaction that can result in slight melting. Unlike many oil-based clays, Monster Clay will not become brittle, dry out or lose plasticity over time. Monster Clay is formulated to retain its original composition indefinitely.
Can Monster Clay be painted?
Yes. Monster Clay can be painted with craft acrylics, although it is not designed to as it is a transitional medium and will remain in a malleable state.
Does Monster Clay contain any hazardous components?
No. Monster Clay is composed entirely of food grade non-toxic ingredients and is sulfur free. It has been tested by a certified toxicologist and conforms to ASTM D-4236. Monster Clay contains no hazardous ingredients.
Could Monster Clay be considered a vegan friendly product?
In the sense that it contains no animal products or animal byproducts, the answer is yes. That being said, do NOT eat Monster Clay!
How many Colors does Monster Clay come in?
Currently, we offer 3 colors: Brown, Gray, and Green.
What’s the difference between Soft, Medium, and Hard?
The different grades of Monster Clay—Soft, Medium, and Hard—vary in terms of firmness and pliability, catering to different sculpting needs and preferences. Here's a breakdown of the key differences:
Monster Clay Soft
Firmness: The softest of the three.
Workability: Easier to manipulate at lower temperatures, making it ideal for quick shaping and broad strokes.
Detailing: Good for roughing out forms and creating larger sculptures or initial stages of a piece.
Usage: Preferred for artists who need to work quickly or want to avoid the effort of warming up the clay significantly.
Monster Clay Medium
Firmness: A balanced level of firmness.
Workability: Offers a middle ground, providing a balance between ease of manipulation and ability to hold details.
Detailing: Suitable for both initial shaping and finer detailing work, making it versatile.
Usage: Popular choice for general-purpose sculpting, suitable for a wide range of projects and detail levels.
Monster Clay Hard
Firmness: The firmest of the three.
Workability: Requires more heat to soften and becomes harder when cooled, making it more challenging to manipulate without proper warming.
Detailing: Excellent for intricate details and fine work, as it holds shapes and sharp edges very well.
Usage: Ideal for final detailing, intricate sculptures, and projects where maintaining fine details is crucial.
My clay is too Soft, what can I do to make it firmer?
If you find that your clay is too soft and want to firm it up a little bit, you can place it in a cooler place like a refrigerator or freezer.
